This is the School of Tanggan village, inhabited almost totally by Tibetans. Due to the difficult living conditions, due mainly to the rigid climate and the emargination of the village centre, this area has remained relatively culturally uncontaminated thereby enabling the villagers to preserve traditional habits and customs.
In 2001 we provided for the restoration, and the construction of new classrooms and dormitories, for Tanggan school, utilizing bioclimatic technologies, abiding by the Tibetan architectural style. This school houses about 116 students (from preschool to third grade) with 20 teachers and other staff. Life at the school is very simple, following a natural rhythm.
Owing to the enormous travel distances the children remain at the school at weekends too.
To liven up the children’s lives and make school learning more enjoyable the teachers organize games and competitions in support of the traditional didactic activities: competitions in traditional dance and singing, in reading, writing and reciting poetry in Tibetan, Chinese and English, and in drawing. The class that comes first wins a certificate as well as exercise books and pens for each schoolchild.
Thanks to the rebuilding of the school and to the distance sponsorship project implemented by ASIA since 2003, living conditions at the school have improved considerably, such that the number of children attending the school has increased to a surprising degree.
2017 is also the year in which ASIA has carried out important maintenance works on traditional buildings: the kitchen, the canteen, the teachers’ dormitory, the library and the rooms for extra-didactic activities (art, music, gym and laboratories).
The children supported through our sponsorship project now number about 98, but many others are still in need of our help and yours: make your long distance sponsorship.
