Genesai School

The Genesai Elementary School, located in Yushu Prefecture, Namchen County (Qinghai, China), is one of the few schools enabling Tibetan nomads to attend school. We have been working in this school since 2011, after the terrible 2010 earthquake totally destroyed the city of Yushu and caused much damage in the entire area.

The Genesai School was damaged and we decided to rebuild the building with classrooms in order to improve the level of life inside the school.

But there is still much to do, and it is especially important to find new funds to pay the teachers’ salaries in order to guarantee a good quality education to the nomad children who live in these remote areas.

The level of education in the entire municipality is still very low, and the school still lacks a sufficient number of books and notebooks, a library, a canteen and didactic laboratories to make it easier for the teachers to prepare the scholastic programme and to enrich their lessons.

It is therefore fundamental to start distance support for the children of this school to enable them to have a future, without forgetting their roots. You can help them too by your long distance sponsorship.

This project is based on individual support: the supporter distance sponsors a child or a monk, with whom he/she can create a real and personal relationship through correspondence and travel to the place where the child or monk lives.

We have been working here since 2011:

  • We have refurbished the school
  • We have built the second floor of the building, so that the children now have new classrooms and rooms available
  • We provide each child with didactic material, food, basic healthcare and clothing.

But the children of the Genesai School still need…

Together, we have to continue to provide:

  • food,
  • heating
  • medical care
  • didactic material
  • clothing
  • library
  • canteen service
  • didactic laboratories

The children living in the only school of the Yushu Prefecture where it is possible to learn the Tibetan culture need our help now.

The Genesai School is located at an altitude of 3,500 metres, in mountains covered with pastures here the nomad herders graze their sheep, goats and yaks..

The Genesai Elementary School was built in 2005 in an area used for grazing to the east of the municipality (in Nangqian County).

The school goes from first to sixth grade and currently has 95 students (46 boys and 49 girls), 8 teachers and 3 cooks.

The teachers organize various extracurricular activities to make learning more pleasant and to make the life of the children more vivacious: contests for traditional dances and songs, reading, writing and the recital of poetry in Tibetan and Chinese, and drawing and calligraphy competitions.

It only takes 80 cents a day to cover the basic needs of a child, if you think about it… It is less than the cost of a cup of coffee.
