Galingteng Monastery

Galingteng Monastery is one of the most important sacred sites in Eastern Tibet. In the past, the monasteries were supported by the village population, but today the Tibetan community is in serious economic difficulty.

Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, closely linked to this monastery, where he spent his childhood studying with his uncle, the then abbot Khyentse Choekyi Wangchuk, requested the intervention of ASIA.

This is why we started an integrated programme to develop this area in 1993: webuilt the study college of the Monastery, the historical monument of the Monastery were restored, we built two clinics and a scholl.

In 2004, we started up the long distance sponsorship programme for monks who live in this monastery. Choose long-distance sponsorship! Support a Tibetan monk and help prevent Tibetan culture to disappear for good.

This project is based on individual support: the supporter distance sponsors a child or a student, or a monk, or a elder with whom he/she can create a real and personal relationship through correspondence and travel to the place where the child or monk lives.

Since 1993 we have:

  1. Built and enlarged the study college of the monastery;
  2. Restored the historical monuments;
  3. Built a school;
  4. Installed two clinics and trained the medical personnel;
  5. Rebuilt the dormitories of the study college after a fire;
  6. Started up the sponsorship of the monks;
  7. Provided all the equipment necessary for the library, kitchen and dormitories of the college;
  8. Restored the Mahakala temple mural paintings;
  9. Built 14 retreat houses on the sacred mountain of Shub lung.

Now we need your contribution, too. Help us preserve the Tibetan culture!

Together, we must continue providing:

  • Food
  • Heating
  • Ritual objects
  • Holy books

Monks at Galingteng monastery need our help now.

The Monastery was founded in the 9th century by Lha Lung Dpal Gyi rDorje, a student of Padmasambhava, who took refuge here after the murder of the king of Central Tibet Lhang Dharma.

Originally a Nyingmapa monastery, it was then affiliated with the Sakyapa traditions by the Derge regents, and today still combines the practices of the two traditions.

Lha Lung Dpal Gyi rDorje, the Mahasiddhas A Gyi rDorje, A Gnyan Kungda’Grags, Kunga Palden, Khyentse Choekyi Wangchuk are some of the most famous masters who lived, studied and practised here.

It only takes 80 cents a day, if you think about it… It is less than the cost of a cup of coffee.
